How to Calculate Shipping When Reselling Online
If you are considering reselling online, then it is likely that you have asked yourself “how do I ship these items?”
Sourcing the items is the fun part. Processing the listing is the necessary part.
You can’t sell it if you don’t list it.
Shipping the item is last step in the process.
We have several other posts about shipping tips and tricks, but today I want to focus on how to calculate shipping BEFORE you publish a listing.
We crosslist items across multiple platforms, starting with eBay.
In most cases, we estimate the shipping cost as best we can. Two variables are estimated:
weight of the shipped package (not just the item)
the dimensions of the package
Using a food scale, weigh your item. Let’s say you are selling a pair of boots and they weight 2.5 lbs.
When calculating your shipping, add some weight to account for the box and packing material. In this case I would estimate my shipping to be 4 lbs.
Using a tape measure, estimate how large the box will be for the item once it is packed and ready to ship.
I always go a little larger than the item, again to account for packing material.
Enter those items into the listing description.
I also recommend adding two options for buyers:
USPS Ground
USPS Priority
Let the buyer decide how much they want to spend and how fast they want to get their purchase.
