What’s my item worth?

Years ago, Raymond and I taught a class on how to research the value of your collectibles & vintage items. Today, we thought we would teach you as well. I will use a vintage butter mold to walk you through the process.

WHERE TO RESEARCH

There are many websites to help determine the worth of your item. Our preferences are

  • eBay

  • Etsy

  • Facebook Marketplace (great for furniture)

WHAT TO LOOK UP

Start with the maker of the item if you know it, otherwise you could use descriptors like “rattan” or “ceramic” or “wooden”.

TIP: be sure to filter the listings for “sold” when searching eBay.

eBay is the only platform (as of now) that allows you to view what an item has sold for. This is a great indicator for the market value of your item.

It is also helpful to see how many of any one product is available for purchase in the online secondhand world; this can be helpful if you are planning to sell your item.

In our example of the butter mold, 229 have sold in the past month and 248 are currently listed for sale.

This tells me 1) there is a market for the item and 2) it is not necessarily rare.

A rare item will never common and a common item will never be rare. I learned that from a man at Perry’s Jewelers.

Some things can be highly collectible but not highly valuable. The value of an item is determined by its rarity and condition; that’s it. :)
