Why you should have a downsizing sale
When was the last time you moved? For us, it was 6 years ago. I still remember how overwhelmed I was at the process of packing and unpacking, the latter being the worst.
I opened box after box only to be disappointed at the contents.
“Why did I bring this?”
“Why do I have so many XYZ?”
Watching the clean and empty home begin to fill up with all my stuff took the wind out of my sails. I just wanted it all gone and I wanted to start over with our furnishings and our stuff, only to add back very slowly and intently.
It is funny how disenchanted we can become with our things when they come out of the place they’ve lived for so long and make their way into a new (fresh) space.
Why should you have a downsizing sale?
First and foremost to deal with the overwhelming feeling of moving. For example, if you are having a sale then the process goes something like this:
Decide what you want to keep
Pack only those things
Hire movers to move said things
Leave the rest (yes all of it) and allow a company to come in and handle it from top to bottom
Instead of spending money on moving things you don’t want, decide on the forefront what you will keep and what you won’t.
If you are thinking, “why would I hire someone when I could do it myself,” then let me remind you of an age old adage that says “just because you can doesn’t mean you should”.
Could you have a yard sale?
Yes. Have you had a yard sale recently? Two things come to mind: a lot of time and minimal return.
Could you sell on Facebook Marketplace?
Yes. Have you sold on the marketplace before? It is unlikely that the success rate will be high when trying to clear 40-60% of your household. You might have success with furniture which is what the marketplace is more suited for.
When you hire a third party, all of the decisions about what to put where, how to market and photograph, what to price something at, and how will you manage pickups are handled for you.
Even the trash - that is handled for you as well.
The payoff is a seamless move that you are excited about and less money wasted on moving unwanted things. What a WIN!
