Where to shop for things to resell

There are many different places that you can shop for items to resell. Here is a list of my favorite places.

Estate Sales

Hands down the best place to shop to items to resell as you are guaranteed to find something! Probably many somethings to resell.

The only caveat is price. I recommend going early if you want the best stuff (or) going on discount day if you want the best price. Those two rarely exist together. When pricing our own estate sale items, we try to price slightly below market value. I always tell resellers to shop with us on our discount day to get the best price. I also don’t mind paying a higher prices at estate sales when I know I will find something great to resell. That is not always the case at thrift stores or yard sales. ;)

Reselling Story: I once bought an obelisk clock from an estate sale in Lake Norman for $2 and resold on eBay for $225.

Thrift Stores

When not shopping an estate sale, I recommend sourcing items from thrift stores or second hand stores. Prices will vary from store to store and from location to location. I have no real rhyme or reason for which stores I shop. I have found great things at great prices at random thrift stores off the beaten path. I have also found great things in the heart of Charlotte when you would think they are overshopped and overpriced.

Reselling Story: There are way too many to share! This is where I do most of my sourcing.

Yard Sales

The cheapest place to shop will be from someone’s yard. Most of the time. ;)

I rarely yard sale (gasp!). Once yard sales become a thing, I find myself knee deep in setting up and pricing estate sales. I can tell you the last thing I want to do is sift through people’s stuff at 7a on a Saturday when I’ve been sifting through someone’s stuff all week long.

With that said, I LOVE to yard sale! You never know what you will find and I really get a thrill from negotiating. ;) Always bring cash and bring more than you think you will need. I hate leaving things behind because I didn’t bring enough cash.

Don’t forget about church yard sales too!

Reselling Story: I bought 10+ wooden duck decoys from a yard sale in Charlotte, paying $2 each and resold for $120+ each.

Barn Sales / Pop Up Sales

These types of sales are always so fun to browse and shop but I find the price point a little too high. My goal is always 1000% profit.

Antique Malls

It seems counterintuitive to think you can find deals at an antique mall. From personal experience I know you can and I have several reseller friends who will shop antique malls on the rare occasion and still come up with something great for their online shop!

It’s unlikely that you will find much to resell but if you have time on your side then definitely train your eye and stop by your local antique mall.

Reselling Story: I bought a vintage Coach briefcase from an antique mall in Hickory for $10 and resold on eBay for $100.

FB Marketplace

This all comes down to keywords and knowing what to look for. And the willingness to drive to someone’s home and pickup said good deal.

Reselling Story (not mine): Someone bought a swing vase off Facebook for $4 - it was listed as β€œpretty blue vase with artificial flowers”. The reseller plans to flip it with a target selling price of $80+.

There is money everywhere! It just depends on where and how you like to shop.

Where are you going this week?
