On My Thrift List
Recently I went through my closet in an effort to make room. While it wasn’t packed to the brim, it did feel very full. I had been pulling for the same things to wear week after week and decided enough was enough and things needed to get purged.
If I wasn’t wearing it, then it needed to go.
If I wasn’t wearing it, then there was a reason (too tight, too short, unflattering, etc).
By now, we all know that I love any excuse to organize. Your stuff. My stuff. Everybody’s stuff.
But for this story, let’s stay focused on my stuff.
Some things were extremely easy to let go because they just didn’t fit. As much as I hate to admit it, I am not an XS anymore. Goodbye.
Some things were much harder to let go because I really wanted to like them. Therefore, I decided to make a deal with myself.
One: it had to fit.
Two: I had to actually like it and want to wear it.
Three: I had to identify why I wasn’t wearing it.
When one and two were met, then I noticed that I wasn’t wearing something because I lacked the right shoes or top to complete the outfit.
So I made a list of things to buy to complete my current closet. A BOLO list if you will.
BOLO: Be On The Look Out
I am a much better thrift shopper when I have a list of things to keep an eye out for.
Here is my current thrift list (clothing edition):
Pants to wear with my blush pink loose fitting blouse (key words: loose fitting)
Plain short sleeve T (not gray, I have enough of that color)
White tank (that I can wear solo)
Light blue tank
Golf course attire (collared shirts, shorts)
Casual flats
White sneakers
Fall flats
Tips
Make a Google list to keep it handy.
Do this seasonally. If you find yourself with an incomplete list post-season, then commit to donating it and starting fresh next year.
Search Pinterest for ideas and inspiration. Take a look at my “Laid Back Style” Board here.
Remember, the decision to keep something is always the hardest part. Once it is gone, rarely do you miss it or even think about it.
