Facebook Buy/Sell Groups Are The New Yard Sales
Raise your hand if you remember the days of hosting yard sales.
hand raised
Time was spent on getting together all the yard sale wares, then sorting them and displaying them. Maybe pricing. Maybe not. ;)
Then the longest Saturday morning ever where you walk outside before the roosters are up to be nickeled and dimed to death over your yard sale options.
1p rolls around and you spend another hour bagging up what didnβt sell and carting down to the Goodwill. Back home, you decide to count your money (the best part).
$325.50
Wait, that cannot be right! Surely I made more than that!
And then you vow to never have another yard sale as long as you live.
Well friend, I am here to tell you that you donβt have to host another single yard sale as we have a new kid in town.
Facebook Buy/Sell Groups are the new yard sales
Yes there are some general rules on these being effective so letβs dive in.
Join a popular group in your area
And by popular I mean one with active buyers and sellers. Some groups are listed as private so ask around your friend circle to see which ones they recommend and then have them add you.
Watch on the side lines to see what is selling quickly
Swimwear might be selling well in early spring. While winter jackets and ski gear in early November. Sell what is selling. ;)
Gather up 20 or so items to get started
Anything more and you run the risk of overwhelming buyers.
Maybe it is all dresses. Or dresses and jumpsuits. Try to keep it relatively organized and centrally themed.
Post one picture to create the listing and then add each item to the comment section
The picture could be of all the items for sale laying flat on the floor. Or maybe something pretty that you pulled off the internet. Say a picture of a beach for your swimsuit sale.
Price attractively
Now you donβt have to give it away but the more attractive the price the more buyers you will get
Take good photos
You can hang the items on the back of a door. You could use a mannequin. Or you could lay them flat on the floor. Just make sure the photo encourages someone to buy rather than scroll right on past
Your goal isnβt to sell out
It is unlikely that you will sell everything that you list. However, selling 60% of your items at $5 or $6 each will gross you more than selling out at a cheaper price.
Letβs look at this example:
I decided to sell some swimsuits, dresses, and athleisure that I was no longer wearing or using. I listed 16 items and sold 8.
I made a total of $51.
Time invested = 1 hr:
Decluttering: priceless
Photos: <30 minutes
Listing: 15 minutes
Coordinating pickups: ~15 minutes
